The sun starts to set behind the cast bronze obelisk outside of Mackinac Hall October 7. Obelisks are tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monuments which end in a pyramid-like shape at the top. The original builders of these monuments were the Ancient Egyptians who called them "tekhenu" and built them as a symbol of their sun god, Ra.

Tiburcio Lince has joined GVSU as the director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA). Having grown up in Mexico before migrating to Texas, Lince brings with him firsthand experience as a first-generation college student, as well as a master's degree in Spanish and Iberian studies from Texas State University and years of experience in diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.

This year, Bob and Ellen Thompson and their foundation have helped 1,120 other GVSU students realize their college dreams while helping to decrease their college debt. The Thompson Foundation has donated more than $36 million to Grand Valley, creating the largest scholarship program at the university.
